while Lacey's away, the bloggers will play!

(Disclaimer: This is my first time using blogger and posting by email, so if it all blows up in a non HTML mess, I'm sorry. Hopefully the links will all work and not make me look like an idiot guest posting!)

So as everyone probably knows by now, the lovely Lacey is in Israel for 10 days with her sidekick, Arielle. Or is Lacey the sidekick? Whatever, they are both in Israel and can take turns being the sidekick or something! Just as long as they don't give each other a complex like Batman and Robin because that totally wouldn't be good. Anyway...can you tell I have no idea what I'm talking about? I was kind of at a complete loss as what to write about today. I rarely know what I'm going to put on my own blog, so we are going to wing it here.

Did you know those two awesome Jews, who currently in Israel, review?

Review what, you ask?

I'll tell you -- books! They review books over at Two Jews Reviews.

Who doesn't love a good book when they are about to hop on a plane for a super long flight? So that's what we are going to talk today. Since I have fabulous taste in everything, of course, that means I have fabulous taste in books.

Jamie's Top 5 Favorite Books (that aren't Harry Potter because that is a given, duh)

Geek Love by Katharine Dunn
A family who runs a traveling circus, decide to breed their own freak show by experimenting with drugs during pregnancy to create genetically altered children. What? No, seriously, a son with flippers for appendages, an albino dwarf, Siamese twins, a son that seems normal at birth which almost cause his heartbroken parents to abandon him, but has telekinetic powers that show themselves, just in the nick of time. And that is only the beginning. I know it sounds all kinds of ridiculous, but trust me. It's a bizarre and twisted BUT amazing novel and you won't want to put it down. It's definitely one of my favorite books ever. I always recommend it to people.

A Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
This is the only book by Margaret Atwood, I have ever read but I love it. I've been meaning to pick up another, so if you have any recommendations, please comment with them. I'd love you forever. Anyway, A Handmaid's Tale would probably be a feminist's worst nightmare. It's set in the future after war and our government is demolished, the military has taken over control and women have no rights. Period. The lucky, healthy ones are given to rich, higher-ups to help them procreate and bear their children.  They are basically used for breeding. Thought provoking and captivating.

Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk
Now, you either love Palahniuk or you hate him. In the case of Invisible Monsters, I love him.  A super model "accidentally" gets her jaw blown off, drag queens, cross country road trips robbing estate sales of all their prescription drugs along the way. A tale of revenge. Love it.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon

An autistic, 15 year old Christopher is found cradling a neighbors dead dog and is falsely accused and arrested. Christopher begings to investigate trying to find out who really killed  Wellington the poodle. A great quick read.

The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
In 1973, a 14 year old Susie is lured away walking home from school and is murdered and no one knows who did it. Except for Susie, who is narrating the story from heaven as she watches her family unravel after her death. She watches from "her heaven" as her family and friends grow, experience things she never got a chance to and watch her father who never gives up on trying to find out what happened to her. I really liked how the author described heaven too. Your heaven is what you want it to be, but sometimes other people's heaven may intertwine with yours if you want the same thing. A good read.

So there you have it! Whoa, it kind of seems like all I read are weird, twisted, creepo, depressing books. I promise that is not the case and that these are all excellent. I give you the Oh! How Lovely! seal of always fabulous. If you don't like them, I will bake you cookies. They might taste bad, but they will be cookies none the less. Hey, I said I have fabulous taste, that doesn't mean I make tasty things. I'm a klutz in the kitchen.

What are your favorite books, Lacey's freaders?

You can always find me over at Oh! How Lovely! Stop by. Say hi. Enjoy your stay!

I'm a big Palahniuk fan. I've always wanted to read The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night, but I just haven't gotten around to it.

I'd really have to think about my five favorite books. I'll be back! Or maybe I'll turn it into my own fancy post...OoOoOo!
